The point where Paul's involvement with his 3RRR program ends
and his own life begins is difficult to determine, as his interest in
film is almost pathological. "I watch so many films that I have the
delusion that the films are watching me," he says in conspiratorial
tones. Watching films as a full-time occupation can lead to some peculiar
wardrobe adjustments. Paul's favourite item of clothing is his well-worn
pair of moccasins. "I wear them all the time; I put them on as soon
as I get home. But I get into trouble when I wear them to the milk bar.
You can't really do that after you've had them for more than a couple
of months." Other vices include Malaysian food and scotch & soda.
Asking Paul Harris to nominate his favourite film is a loaded question,
and of course does not get an answer. When asked about his favourite
politician, though, the answer is inevitably film-related. His favourites
are Mr. Longfellow Deeds, played by Gary Cooper, in Mr. Deeds Goes to
Town, and Mr. Smith, played by James Stewart, in Mr. Smith goes to Washington.
(For enthusiasts, both number among a series of 30s comedies directed
by Frank Capra).
Paul Harris spends his non-3RRR hours writing for The Age and its
subsections, The Green Guide and EG, Directing the St Kilda Short Film
Festival, curating seasons at the Melbourne International Film Festival
and editing film scripts.
